You hastily dismissed the sermon becuase of the title, and probably didn't take time to see that the verses being preached did not include the "back from the dead thing". So, having heard it - the title was a perfect fit for the sermon.

Jon - great sermon on Sunday. It has been digging deep into my soul all week long.

Matthew Henry said, "The sight of a multitude puts fire into a preacher, which yet must arise a desire of their profit, and not for his praise."

Thank you very much for catering to the desire of profiting the crowd, and not heaping up empty words that will surely maximize your praise. I hope things are going well.

Being transformed into the image of Jesus is not taking on His physical aspects, whatever they may be, but taking on aspects of His inner character.

Individuality still exists in each and every person, which is by God's design, no doubt. But their is now with the life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus a new way of life to be lived. A life of individuality for sure, but within a larger and more purposeful context of community. That way of life is lived in Jesus kingdom which has now invaded the current world system.

Individuality is like baseball. Every professional baseball player has a specific position they play: pitcher, catcher, short-stop, center fielder, etc. They are all baseball players, but they also have additional identities within the sport. And just because there may be 100 catchers in MLB doesn't mean they are all the same. They have uniqueness' of their own; some are outstanding at preventing steals, some never miss a pop up, some 'gel' well with a certain pitcher, etc.

So, when we follow Jesus and trust Him, we begin the process of transformation into His image much like a adolescent boy in a matter of a decade transforms into a professional baseball player.

The reason it is 'glorious' is because the character traits that begins to develop are: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and discipline. This is what the world needs so badly.

This is what Jesus was like and He wants us to be like Him. That is His intention for human beings. My identity in Jesus doesn't eliminate my other identities; it places all other worldly identities in their proper order.

Colossians 3.10-11
"10 and [we] have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him-- 11 a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all."

Sorry for the lengthy response, let me know if you have any further questions. You have always been more of a politician than a theologian, but I would sit equally happily in either one of your supposed congregations. Surely, you can be as confident of my vote for a position in the senate as that of a deacon. I have no doubt that you will one day lead men, and that you will do it without assumption or entitlement. Whether it be in court or in Church, you will one day lead men. As for Josh, well, he has always been the artist who accents greatness. As for Seth,he has always harmoniously resounded what we weakly name greatness. You have always simply been greatness. Your friendship and your depth will ever be the cause of my gratitude. I consider you nothing more than the product of Redemption, and I thank you for being just that.Ryan Eagerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07457617941226044714noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7528820427719161813.post-40227398760112515072008-06-25T19:31:00.000-05:002008-06-25T19:31:00.000-05:002008-06-25T19:31:00.000-05:00Looking forward to it, friend. So many times, I think people (including me) aren't quite sure where to go when they open their Bilbes and when they do, they read a few verses here and a few there. This committment to one book allows you to gain so much more from your study time. Jon and I read 1 John silently to ourselves and took notes along the way. When we were both finished, we discussed our comments, questions and favorite verses. It's great for individual time as well as group discussions.

Great post Jon! It's easy to come home from work, crash on the couch in front of the TV and remain there until it's time to make the transfer to bed for the night. Making time to do something like cooking a meal incorporates communication, fellowship and teamwork with the ones we love. It helps us focus on investing our time in each other instead of the world. Jon and I have really enjoyed this new blessing! I hope you try it...you'll like it! (And don't worry, we have frozen chicken tenders and pizza in the freezer too!
